Are BMW-Sauber and McLaren Mercedes evenly matched? That depends on who you talk to I guess.
4 races down and the drivers championship standings Ferrari, McLaren, and BMW-Sauber look like this
1. Kimi Raikkonen 29
2. Lewis Hamilton 20
3. Robert Kubica 19
5. Nick Heidfeld 16
6. Heikki Kovalainen 14
In Australia Lewis Hamilton dominated with Heikki Kovalainen finishing 5th 18 seconds back of Hamilton and set the fastest lap of the race. Nick Heidfeld finished second 5.4 seconds back of Hamilton and Robert Kubica finished 9th with a retirement.
In Malaysia, Raikkonen was dominant winning the race easily, but second belonged to Robert Kubica 19.5 secs back and quite a bit ahead of Kovalainen who was third and 38.4 secs back. Lewis Hamilton qualified poorly in 9th and finished 5th 46.5 secs back. Nick Heidfeld finished 6th 49.8 secs back of Raikkonen, but set the fastest lap of the race.
On to Bahrain. Again, Ferrari dominated this race with Massa winning and Raikkonen 2nd. 3rd place was Robert Kubica 4.9 secs back of Raikkonen and 4th place to Nick Heidfeld who was 8.4 secs back. Heikki Kovalainen, the best of McLaren once again finished 5th behind both BMW-Saubers a full 26.7 secs back of Raikkonen. We can safely say that Lewis Hamilton didn’t figure in any leader stats in this race.
At the Spanish Grand Prix, Hamilton bounced back finishing 3rd behind both Ferraris 4.1 secs back of Kimi Raikkonen, but only 1.5 secs behind Felipe Massa. Unfortunately Kovalainen had a bad crash, but until then was keeping good pace with a fastest lap time of 1:22.453 and was in 6th place at the time of his crash ahead of Nick Heidfeld.
Robert Kubica finished the race in 4th after starting 4th only 5.6 secs back of Raikkonen. Robert Kubica was pushing Hamilton and both cars pitted together and came out the same way. In this race it was pretty clear that as the race progressed BMW-Sauber and McLaren Mercedes were running pretty much the same pace as the gaps didn’t change through to the end.
I do like looking at data and trying to piece it together, but looking at individual lap times, gaps lap by lap etc. don’t make the picture any clearer. From what I have seen in the races so far, and looking at what I have here, there isn’t much to separate McLaren Mercedes from BMW-Sauber. It would have been better to have both drivers from both teams finish without problems, but it is what it is.
BMW-Sauber have been very consistent and continue to improve slowly. McLaren on the other hand have been up and down in their performance. Spain was a much better race for both Lewis Hamilton and the team. I think McLaren Mercedes will improve throughout the season along with BMW-Sauber, but on what I see so far, I have to give a slight edge to BMW-Sauber for their strong and consistent finishes and continued upward climb.
I’d like to hear what you think. Weigh in on who is better and let us know why you think so.
There is also a poll in the sidebar so you can also cast your vote.

1I think that BMWs are actually marginally quicker than McLarens now. Their weakness is their starts and this tends to put them behind the McLarens from the beginning, from where they can only hope for luck in the pitstops or a mistake from Hamilton or Kovalainen to enable them to get past; the performance of the cars is really that close.
So, if BMW can get the car to put down its power at the start as efficiently as the McLaren, they should emerge ahead. I believe they will do so anyway as the season wears on and their pace of development exceeds that of both McLaren and Ferrari. That’s where I differ from the “experts” - they think that BMW will not be able to keep pace with the development of the big two, I say that BMW have already demonstrated greater pace than either in catching up to them. We shall see.

2The critics in F1 almost want BMW-Sauber to fail to prove their point that it takes many years to produce a consistently winning team. I see a faster development in BMW-Sauber than I do in both Ferrari and McLaren, but it will taper off eventually but not until a wake up call is given to Ferrari and McLaren.

3I also see BMW Sauber a bit faster than McLaren now, but the advantage may shift from one to the other depending on the track.
I want to see what will happen in Monaco as that is the first track ahead where Ferrari struggled last year…
